What a Metalbird is Made Of (And Why It Looks So Good)Updated 9 days ago
What is a Metalbird made from?
Each Metalbird is cut from 3mm Corten® steel — a copper-chromium alloy used in fancy outdoor architecture and sculpture parks where people pretend they “get it.” It’s tough as nails and looks better with age.
What’s with the rust?
It’s not rust, it’s personality.
Corten steel forms a protective outer layer called a patina. That bright orange phase is just the beginning — it’ll deepen into warm browns and moody charcoal as it settles in. Like a fine wine, or your favourite uncle.
Will it flake or corrode?
Nope. It weathers on the outside while staying solid on the inside. Think outer crust, inner strength. Our decade-old birds are still standing proud.
Can I stop it rusting?
You can delay it if you must. A matte outdoor clear coat or powder coating can help. But really — the rust is kind of the point. Let the bird do its thing.
Do I need to maintain it?
Absolutely not. No oiling, polishing or pampering. These birds are the strong, silent type.
Can I paint my Metalbird?
Sure, if you’re feeling bold. Just know paint doesn’t always play nice with Corten. If colour’s a must, you could go to a professional a powder coat. Otherwise, let it rust in peace.
